ABOUT THE SHOW

Shel Silverstein’s The Devil and Billy Markham tells the improbable story of down-on-his-luck singer/songwriter Billy Markham.  Told in classic Silverstein pentameter and set on Nashville's famed Music Row, the six chapter tome details Markham's odyssey from the legendary Linebaugh's sandwich shop, to Hell, to Heaven and then back again. Winner of a 2017 Standard Bank Ovation Award.

Cairns has mastered the one-man storytelling show; he’s a master manipulator of his voice, face and body in creating a handful of distinctive characters who pull us along for the ride (this time via hell, and heaven too)

Director Jenine Collocott and actor James Cairns make a helluva meal out of The Devil and Billy Markham, an epic poem in iambic pentameter by the late Shel Silverstein

James Cairns puts in a stellar performance in performing this one-hander. Not only does he create all the characters but he does so using American deep south accents while delivering the very descriptive, hour-long, rhyming script. It is a superb effort and he pulls it off with considerable style and poise
